The anticipation and bustle of pre-show was abruptly shattered Friday night, as BFS was thrown into full swing with a blistering 5 song set from Hatebreed. The churning riffs and pounding drums only got the crowd warmed up for Mudvayne and Disturbed, both of which delivered 7 song sets of pure hard-core, cathartic metal. When Slipknot hit the stage, however, was when the shit hit the fan. Some of the most intense moshing That I have ever witnessed ensued, as Sevendust slammed through such songs as "Waffle" and "Home". As soon as Sevendust left the stage, a crew began to set up for Slipknot. With nine members, that's a lot of equipment which needs to be assembled. after an agonizing half hour, the lights dimmed and the apex twin style introduction,"the whole thing I think is sick" rang through the crowded hall. as smoke rolled onto the stage the band members took their places, an eerie light show reflected of the cement walls. They then ripped into the viscous track "Sic". Over the next hour, the nine member outfit smashed through songs such as "Eyeless" and "Prosthetics". Through the course of the night, 20 gallon kegs were hurled around the stage. The DJ jumped from a 18 foot high speaker rack into the crowd. The drum set was set on fire, buckets of ice water were thrown into the crowd, along with dozens of records. the crowd response was pheromonal and the mob of moshing animosity displayed there love accordingly. The biggest and only problem of the night lay not in the performers but in the building itself. The acoustics were so horrible, that I, a longtime Slipknot fan, could not even distinguish half of the songs played. Most of the set just sounded like pounding cacophony. This was incredibly disappointing, because I recently saw slipknot in Milwaukee, and they sounded awesome. Shane Parker |
